Typically, I'm skeptical when I see sales tactics like this. Get ready for another hokey response book, right? But because I am familiar with some of Gresh and Slattery's other works, I was curious enough to buy and read Pulling Back the Shades as our Women's Minister and I talked about this blog series (and let me tell you, I had an interesting conversation with the lady at the bookstore when she saw what I was buying).

First of all, know that this book focuses more on the longings we all have as women and how erotica writers and publishers exploit those longings in order to produce "successful" stories. In case you're wondering what those longings are, Gresh and Slattery identify the following:

  • To escape reality
  • To be cherished by a man
  • To be protected by a strong man
  • To rescue a man
  • To be sexually alive

Gresh and Slattery also focus on the deception of "mommy porn" and how we can know from Scripture what is black and white regarding sexual behavior and how we can navigate areas that the Bible does not specifically mention (such as oral sex and whether or not sex toys and spanking are okay in marriage). They also look at BDSM (Bondage, Dominance, Sadism, & Masochism) - both the draw of it and the differences between submission in marriage and abuse. One facet I particularly like about the book (in addition to the appropriateness and the candor of the writers) is the short conclusion at the end of each chapter that walks you through some practical action steps you can take based on what you read.
