Sunday we sang Only A Holy God together, which was such a wonderful reminder of the magnitude and majesty of God. Like it says in Isaiah 40,

"Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand
or marked off the heavens with the span of his hand?
Who has gathered the dust of the earth in a measure
or weighed the mountains on a balance
and the hills on the scales?"
Isaiah 40:12 (CSB)

The point of this passage is, whatever your category for God is - IT’S TOO SMALL! He’s so much bigger, He’s so much greater.

But along with being this great and majestic, that song also reminds us that God is morally flawless, He’s morally pure. I’ve said before that He is the only unimpeachable king. No one is going dig up dirt and dethrone the Lord. It’s not going happen!

And this is the glory of the gospel, this holy God, the one we just sang about took on flesh... just like you and I have. He lived the life you and I should have lived. And then died in our place - on the cross. And in doing that he made a pathway back to the holy God for us.

This is the greatest news in the whole world. And it’s the reason we sing about it every week. It’s the reason we never tire of singing songs like In Christ Alone that help us think so deeply about the gospel.
