Scripture memorization can be fun!  Check out the activities below that you can do at home to help your child learn and retain the scriptures they are memorizing each month!

Bible Verse Hide and Seek
Write the Bible Verse on slips of paper and hide them around the room.  Have your child search and find the slips of paper.  When all of the pieces have been found help your child put them in order. Repeat this game several times, each time letting your child do more and more of "putting the pieces together" on their own.  Don't forget to include the Scripture reference!

Memory Verse Ladder
On a large piece of paper glue two strips of black construction paper about six inches apart.  Write the memory verse you are working on in phrases on strips of paper that are six inches wide.  Have your child work on learning their scripture--one phrase at a time. As they memorize the phrases they can glue that phrase rung to the ladder.  Put the ladder that you are building somewhere where it is visible to the child everyday-- such as the refrigerator.  Help them review each rung and add new rungs to the ladder each day until the ladder is built.

Memory Verses On A Can
Using a large oatmeal container cut a piece of construction paper just large enough to go around the container’s entire girth with a small overlap--glue to the container.  On another sheet of paper divide the paper horizontally, using a marker, into three sections, making the two top sections wider than the section at the bottom.  Divide the paper up and down into equal sections of the number of memory verses you are trying to memorize.  Each verse will get a top section, a middle section, and a lower section for the reference.

Cut the strips--lengthwise or horizontally--and secure to the can by taping or gluing the ends together, being sure the strips are not glued to the container and that they can be turned.  Divide the memory verse into two parts--writing the first part on a top section and the second part on a middle section and then the reference on a bottom section. To review memory verses, the child will enjoy turning each strip so that the three parts of the verse line up. Answers can be written on a separate sheet of paper to be kept inside the container for reference.

Index Card Race Review
Write out the memory verse your child is working on a word at a time on 3x5 index cards. Practice putting the cards in order until the child has the verse memorized. When the child has confidently memorized the verse turn all of the cards over and mix them up. Time the child as he turns over each card and puts the verse in order. You can play several times to see if they can beat their best time.

Picture Book Memory
On several sheets of paper have your child illustrate the verse they are trying to memorize by phrase or key word.  Make a wordless book with the illustrations.  Put the scripture reference on the Cover with an illustration that would remind the child of what the book is about.  Let the child "read" the book with they are done using the illustrations they have drawn as clues.

Back and Forth
Practice saying the scripture you are trying to memorize with your child a few words at a time. You say the first few words and then point to your child and let him say the next few words--it is then your turn again. Keep the game going until the scripture has been said including the reference. As your child gets more confident in the game let them be in charge and start the game.

Thanksgiving/Fall Pumpkin Memory Verse Game
Cut out 12 pumpkins from orange construction paper (about 2 inches in diameter). Write out the verses your child has learned over the last few months or new verses that they are memorizing on the pumpkins. Put one half of the verse on one pumpkin and the other half of the verse (including the reference) on the other.  Take an egg carton and turn it upside down. You can paint or have your child color the carton with markers in fall colors.  Paste a border of "grass" around the outside edge of the carton.

Using a knife cut slits in each egg cup. Fold the pumpkin scriptures in half and place in the slits. To play the game have your child pick two pumpkins from the pumpkin patch and see if they are a match.  If they match he gets to keep the pumpkins.  If not, he puts them back. The next child (or adult) takes a turn until all of the pumpkins have been picked from the pumpkin patch.
