Update: March 1, 2007: Good News!
Good news! The first words we heard from our interpreter this morning were, "You can see your son today." Heather, stop your running in place... we're going to see the baby! We were off for the baby house. They told us that we would only have 30 minutes with him each visit. We told them we'd be fine with 30 seconds each visit... we just couldn't wait to see him!
We stood their waiting in the playroom for them to bring him in. The giddy smiles were back. It may seem overdramatic to some, and some may think, "It's only been a few days since you've seen him," but the truth is... we're hooked. This little guy has captured our hearts. And so they brought him in. I thought, "Restrain yourself, Dave," but then I couldn't help it. Heather took him in her arms, and I followed right behind. We smothered the poor kid. He's still a little sick, he's congested, tired, and weak, he's been isolated from everyone and everything else for the last five days, and now all of the sudden he finds himself drowning in our smiles, hugs, and kisses. And we didn't stop. For the next 30 minutes, he got our undivided attention and affection.
I can't help but to see a picture here. My personal time in the Word today just happened to be in Luke 15--one of the most beautiful stories in all of Scripture about a Father's love for His children. Known as the parable of the prodigal son, the text says, "While he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him." To see the actions of this Father! He saw his son--the son who had been gone from home for years living in the sickness of his sin. It is as if the Father was waiting, looking for him! He was filled with compassion--the word literally means a physical ache! And then he ran! Jesus pictures the Father running--the only time in the Bible where God is ever described in a hurry! And the Father smothered his son with a hug and a kiss, silencing him with grace. Oh, what depths of love!
We have learned a couple of things today. We have learned what it means to smother with love a child that we long for more than words can express. And we have learned just a little bit more about how God the Father looked for us, waited for us with infinite compassion, ran--hurried!--to us, embraced us in our sinful, selfish sickness, and silenced us with His grace. Now that’s good news...
We love you and miss you!
