Update: February 21, 2007: Super-Dad
We had read about the super-human ability. Friends with children had told us about it. We weren't sure they were telling the truth, but now we’re convinced. We're believers. We've experienced it first hand.

I remember the first time it happened. Our son is having kind of a hard time sitting upright without assistance. Sometimes he's fine, but there's other times when he starts to teeter a little. He’ll be sitting there, happily playing with his toys like everything in the world is great. But then he'll lose his balance. And in an instant his head is aimed straight for the hard floor. And that’s when it happens. As soon as he's headed for trouble, this super-human speed kicks in and dad is there to save the day. It’s pretty unreal to be able to help your child with lightning speed!

However... I have to be honest... it doesn't work all the time. At one point, Heather was across the way talking with our interpreter, and the loud bang of our son's head on the floor reverberated throughout the room. She looked at me. I looked at her. Man, I wasn't quick enough, and I got caught! She comes running over, yelling, "What happened? Where were you?" I look back with a frightened face, "Uh... I don't know... he's fine... I've got things under control! Leave us alone!" Heather shakes her head and comforts her son as the dad who didn't save the day this time sits there dumbfounded.

But I made up for it today. As we've mentioned before, the other child in the room is a little older. He's also bigger and able to walk. And so he comes over to our son this afternoon. I'm working with the baby on how to pull up and stand, and so he was standing with his arms propped up on a chair. And this other guy comes over with one of his toys. We've seen this guy throw things in the room, so we know he's got a pretty good left arm. And so as he approaches our son with the toy in his left hand and a strange look in his eye, I know something is up.

Immediately the left hand is headed straight for our baby's face, and the super-human gift is back. In a flash, I stick my hand in front of my son's face and catch the toy right before contact is made. I proudly look at Heather. "Ahhh... did you see that? Super-Dad saved the day." I kiss his head and think, “Your dad is always going to take care of you.”

So, yes... the super-human ability is there. Something has definitely kicked in, and Heather and I find ourselves always on the alert. This little guy probably doesn't realize it yet, but he's got two people who have committed their lives to looking out for him. We know we can't be there every instant, and we know there will be times when we can't get there fast enough and he has to learn things the hard way, but we humbly embrace this new responsibility to give our lives to take care of our son.

And along the way, we're learning more and more about the ultimate Father--the One who actually is there every instant and the One who committed His entire life--even to the point of death--to looking out for us. All glory be to the Father with all supernatural ability who whispers in our ears, "For all of eternity, Your Dad is going to take care of you."

We love you and miss you!
