Immediate Serving Opportunities

Have you or your small group ever wondered, "How can we get involved in our community?" It can be an overwhelming question. The Church at Brook Hills has partnered with several organizations within the Birmingham area. From time to time they will contact us to let us know of ways that we can work alongside them.

Listed below are the immediate local partner needs that you and/or your small group can contact to get involved within the Birmingham community.

DIFFERENT WAYS TO MAKE DISCIPLES

MAKING DISCIPLES IN MARK'S VILLAGE ALONGSIDE DIVINE FAITH


Divine Faith Missionary Baptist Church
Divine Faith Missionary Baptist Church, our partner in Mark's Village, has a Wednesday night ministry for preschoolers and children. They need people to help with their kids' ministry. Their first week, they had 22 kids, and their second week, they had over 40 children. If you are interested in serving, contact .

Mark's Village/Mission Birmingham

We want to give major emphasis this year to continue to develop our partnership with Mission Birmingham in our disciple-making efforts with the residents of Marks Village. Individuals or groups can join in our efforts in a number of ways. See opportunities below and let know if anyone in your group is interested in these areas:

Marks Village Teen Mentoring
  • Mission Birmingham is looking for a couple of guys to lead a Bible study/mentoring time with teen guys on Tuesdays at 6:00pm. Contact Corey Jackson at 205-422-5580 for more information.
  • Some of our young single girls are leading a weekly Bible study and mentoring time on Tuesdays around 5:30pm.
Book Drive
  • Mission Birminghm is looking for donations of hardback books for preschool, children, and teens for their Marks Village after school program. If your group would like to help set up, decorate, and maintain this space, contact . Please leave donations at the drop-off center in the main lobby by room 130.
    At the bottom of the page are PDFs where you can download wish lists of books for the library at Mark's Village.
After School Program
  • Mission Birmingham is coordinating an after-school program for about 40 to 50 elementary and middle school children every day from 3:30 until 5:00. Weekly volunteers are needed to help with tutoring, games, crafts, reading times, general support, etc. Contact if you would like to volunteer.
Job Preparation Program
  • We will be starting a job preparation program in Marks Village soon. Daytime volunteers will be needed to help teach and mentor participants and to help develop a job fair for participants. Let know someone in your group is interested in helping.
Clothing Closet at Mark's Village
  • Help is needed on a monthly basis to organize the clothing closet at Mark's Village. If you or your small group or interested in helping, contact Corey Jackson at (205) 422-5580.

MAKING DISCIPLES AMONG URBAN ADULTS

Lovelady Center

MAKING DISCIPLES AMONG URBAN CHILDREN & TEENS

Children's Sunday School at Lovelady
Male and female volunteers are needed to teach K-4th grade at Lovelady on Sunday mornings at 9:00am. All volunteers who serve with children must complete a background check. Please pick up a background check from the Adult Small Groups kiosk in the church lobby and submit it to Janice Hannon at the church office. Ossie Ware Mitchell Middle School Mentoring
Ossie Ware Mitchell Middle School in East Lake has a new principal, Mrs. Reynolds. She has asked for volunteers to come help tutor students during school hours at least once a week for about 45 minutes. She especially needs those who can help with Reading and Math or who might have experience working with special needs students. Please let know if anyone in your group is interested.

MAKING DISCIPLES AMONG URBAN CHURCHES

New Rising Star Missionary Baptist Church
If you are interested in tutoring children from East Lake and Gate City, we have partnered with New Rising Star and their after school program. They meet Monday through Friday after school to help and tutor kids that are in their program. Students are in grades K-5 to eighth grade and are broken down in smaller groups by ages under the direction of a certified teacher. The Church at South East Lake
Our brothers and sisters from Brook Hills who have moved into East Lake need help with their Sunday afternoon outreach ministry to children and teens. They need storytellers, people to come hangout with kids or play football with teens, help with crafts, Bible studies, music, etc. Contact for more details.

The Church at South East Lake is setting up a TCASEL Flag Football League for ages 2nd Grade and up in East Lake in order to build relationships with families, and they need coaches, players, snack providers, and people to cheer. It will be every Sunday afternoon that weather allows at 2:00pm either in East Lake Park or at Ossie Ware Mitchell's practice field or both. Contact for more details.


MAKING DISCIPLES IN OUR IMMEDIATE COMMUNITY

Discovery Clubs
If you are interested in taking the Bible and the gospel into public schools, this is a program that goes in after school and operates a Discovery Club one hour a week.

Volunteers are specifically needed to help at Mt. Laurel Elementary School, Chelsea Park Elementary, and Robinson Elementary School, and volunteers must go through a 2 hour training session.

Sav-A-Life Vestavia Hills
If you are interested in volunteering at Sav-A-Life, which provides emotional and spiritual support to men and women with unwanted or unplanned pregnancies, they have two options for their upcoming training (which is only done twice a year):

If you want more information about Sav-A-Life in Vestavia, they have an open house each third Thursday of the month from 8-9am where people can come learn more about what they do and how to volunteer.

Sav-A-Life Vestavia has a current need for size 2, 3, and 4 diapers as well as for wipes in their clothing closet. If you would like to donate, please take diapers and wipes to the Sav-A-Life office at 1480 McGuire Rd., Birmingham, AL 35216.

MAKING DISCIPLES OF THOSE IN PRISON

Jail Ministry and Mentoring Training
Every third Saturday from 9am-noon at Mountain Top Community Church in The Chambers Building, the Alabama Justice Ministries and The Mentoring Birmingham Program will be providing training for those interested in providing ministry to inmates and adult ex-offenders as they transition back to society.

The orientation sessions cost $20, which includes lunch, materials, and a background check.

Women's Opportunities
