Yoshua Galo Hispanic Ministry Intern

What is your job at Brook Hills?
I help pastor Eduardo Torres with administrative and pastoral responsibilities in the Hispanic ministry. I serve on the worship team of the ministry.

What is your favorite part of your job?
Being able to teach and preach the word of God is definitely my favorite part.

How & when did you first come to Brook Hills?
I first started coming to Brook Hills in October of 2010. God ordained several circumstances and situations that lead me to leave my first faith family, which brought me to Brook Hills to serve and to toil for the glory of God through disciple making.

Where are you from?
I’m originally from Managua, Nicaragua in Central America. Hot and humid all year long! I came to Alabama in 2005 on a student visa to get a bachelor’s degree. Now God has allowed me to also pursue a master’s degree.

Who is in your family?
My dad is Cristobal Galo, and my mother’s name is Esperanza Galo. I have five siblings. Jan, who is my younger brother; Michelle and Claudia, who are my older twin sisters; Dennis, who is also older than me; and finally, Victor José, who is my eldest brother.

Please provide a short testimony about your relationship with Christ?
God did not save me until I came to Alabama in 2005. In His grace, He led one of his daughters to invite me to come to a worship service with her. I heard the gospel for what seemed like the first time in my whole life (my father would dispute that claim). I realized at that moment that I had absolutely no idea who Christ was, what He had done, nor what the Bible said. But from that moment on I was captivated by Jesus, and I wanted to know more about Him. I bought a Bible and began reading it like never before in my life. That night God granted me faith and repentance, and ever since, He has been working in my life to sanctify me and conform me to Christ’s image, and to lead me to a greater and greater love for Jesus.

What’s your favorite Bible verse?
It is incredibly hard to pick one verse or even one passage that I like more than another. Every truth in God’s word has the power to unbelievably transform a believer’s life, and to catapult the believer into greater love and worship toward our great God. But I guess if I have to pick one, I would have to choose the passage that shaped my view of scripture very early on in my walk with Christ. Acts was the first book of the Bible that I ever read, and here I found that the ultimate authority was not the word of any man, but the word of God Himself. God used this verse to lead me to always sift the words of man by the word of God, and I am very thankful to God for having done that so early on in my walk with Him.

The [Bereans] were more noble minded than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so. Acts 17:11

What musical skill(s) do you have?
I can play the marimba, the acoustic guitar, and the electric bass.

What was the best concert you’ve ever been to?
Hillsong United in Birmingham! I forget what year it was. Had to be within the past two (2009-2010). Turns out it was a massive worship service, not a concert!

What is the best place you have ever visited?
When God saved me, He opened my eyes to the beauty of His creation. One of the cool places I’ve been to is Moss Rock Preserve in Hoover, AL.

I recommend…
Way too hard to pick just one thing, but I guess I would recommend reading Death by Love by Mark Driscoll. It helped me see how the gospel must be used in counseling, teaching, correction, and in everything else for that matter.

These are a few of my favorite things…
I would definitely have to say chocolate! The problem is that I’m allergic to it. Bummer. But, I’ve come to really like white chocolate too , and it’s not chocolate! I really like playing music, so it’s definitely up there, but I spend most of my time reading.

What do you collect?
I would have to say good books. Pretty nerdy, right?
