Something evident in Scripture is the idea that motivation for Christian obedience is grounded in our identity as a blood-bought, redeemed, child of God. Think of places like Colossians 3:12.
Therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and dearly loved, put on compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. - Colossians 3:12
What you do flows from who you are.
This makes me think of one of the most suspense-filled moments in movie history: the moment that Nala confronts Simba in the Lion King. Do you remember that moment? Nala finds him dancing with a meerkat and a warthog and she says, "What are you doing here? We need you at home--everything is falling apart." Simba's reply to Nala is that no one needs him and he just messes everything up. But what does she say in response? She says, "We need you. You’re the KING and we need you to be who you are."
Christian, that is one of the most important truths that you and I will ever hear. The call of the Christian is to live OUT OF our identity to live a life that flows FROM who we are. The call of the Christian is to BE who we ARE as those UNITED with Christ. This reminds us of what Pastor Matt said last week about our family resemblance; you live like the Father and you act like you're His child.
So now, little children, remain in him so that when he appears we may have confidence and not be ashamed before him at his coming. If you know that he is righteous, you know this as well: Everyone who does what is right has been born of him. -1 John 2:28-29
Do you hear obedience to God flowing from our identity in these verses? What a grace from God that this obedience, flowing from our identity, then leads to confident assurance of His love for us!
This past Sunday we introduced a new song that speaks to this very truth. My hope is that it is an encouragement to you as you find assurance in the fact that you are a child of God. Check it out here:
