Heather Chambers
Job title: Adult Discipleship Ministry Assistant
On the Brook Hills staff since: 2006
Birthday: December 12
Family: I am the proud mother of the two most precious little girls, Ryleigh is 7 and Kennedy, who is 5. We have a cat named Polly that we love. We live in Pelham, Alabama and love going to water parks in the summer and to the mountains in the winter.
Ministry Calling: I accepted my call into ministry in 1996 and God has been refining and training me in every aspect of my life so far. My calling is definitely in making disciples. I love working with women in the various roles we play in life. I love encouraging and teaching women to embrace their identity in Christ... and living that out for Him in the community of faith and in our world.
What I Enjoy About Serving at Brook Hills: Being a part of the staff is really a great privilege. So many times when a faith family member has a need they will call us, we get to pray with them and actually get to be a part of the helping hand that Christ extends to them. There is just nothing like knowing that God is working all around you and through you, simply because you are being obedient.
And really, we do have a lot of fun... It's hard work, but we have so much fun doing it!
Interesting and Unusual Facts: Something that only 300 or so other people in Birmingham know about me--I was the first person baptized at Brook Hills in what is now called the Student Building. That was called the "new building" when i came here. We were so proud of our metal building. Many lives were transformed in there and mine was one. From that, my great love for the Lord, His people and this flock was birthed. I am a great history buff when it comes to the story of Brook Hills.
Another little known fact: I love David Wilcox's music.
My Relationship with Christ: I visited Brook Hills for the first time in 1993 on Palm Sunday. The sermon the pastor gave that day was on the most important words to remember about salvation--"It is finished." He spoke about how Jesus has done everything required for our salvation, and we did not have to "perform, live perfectly, or make up for past mistakes." He told me that Jesus' act was the requirement for God's wrath to be satisfied and that my response was to receive that free gift or reject it. How could I reject that truth? I had so many thoughts, feelings and questions running through my mind.
So, I called and made an appointment with the pastor. I prayed on that Tuesday and was baptized on Maundy Thursday and took communion for the first time as a believer. After that, I entered into a Bible study and several months later was introduced to my mentor for discipleing, Debbie Bullock. They were absolutely pivotal to my spiritual formation, and I owe a debt of gratitude for their commitment to my maturity. I hope to have that same commitment to all the women I disciple.
